Company eyes land at air base

A Louisiana company wants to "buy" surplus Navy land at the Willow Grove 
base with military construction contracts equal to the land's value.

The Shaw Group Inc. submitted an unsolicited proposal to the Navy to buy 
the approximately 800 acres at the Willow Grove base that are expected 
to be deemed surplus land. The U.S. Defense Department is expected to 
announce next month how much land will be available for redevelopment 
once the base is realigned over the next few years.

The multi-billion dollar company, which provides engineering, design, 
construction and other services to government and private companies, 
wants to pay for the land by giving the Navy military construction 
projects that are equal to the fair market value of the land, said Greg 
Preston, deputy director for the Base Realignment and Closure program in 
the Northeast. Shaw would hold the deed to the land if the deal went 
through, he said.
