Portsmouth council backs reuse of Doble reserve center By MICHAEL GOOT Foster's Daily Democrat (NH) June 5, 2007PORTSMOUTH - The Paul A. Doble Army Reserve Center, slated to close in 2011, could be used for recreational or police facilities if a plan backed by the City Council on Monday comes to fruition. A recommendation to close the center was made as part of the Base Closure and Realignment process in 2005. Operations would be consolidated to a new Armed Forces Reserve Center adjacent to Pease Air National Guard Base. The city expressed interest in acquiring the Cottage Street property, which would not become available until 2011 at the earliest. The council had debated between a municipal and housing use of the property. At a previous public hearing, many neighbors came out to speak in opposition to the proposal to reuse the 3.4-acre property for housing, especially workforce housing. At its May 21 meeting, the council voted 8-1 to go forward with using the property for recreational or police uses and hold a final public hearing. ...
