Port rejects Ingleside redevelopment group

Port commissioners declined Tuesday to support Ingleside's proposed 
committee to oversee Navy base redevelopment.

The 4-3 vote exposed a deep divide among commissioners about whether the 
port's authority over 912 acres of Navy base land is at risk, and 
whether an opportunity to gain millions of federal dollars is being missed.

The group proposed by the Ingleside City Council would oversee 
redevelopment of 155 acres -- all but 38 to 40 underwater -- of Naval 
Station Ingleside. The base is expected to close by September 2010 and, 
along with related cuts at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, the impact 
in direct and indirect lost jobs has been estimated at 7,015.

Establishment of a local redevelopment authority, the group recognized 
by the government as the go-between for a military community undergoing 
cuts, has been a hot political battle since the announcement in 2005 
that the base would close. Various efforts to establish one have stalled 
and the port's decision Tuesday presents an obstacle for the Ingleside 
City Council's proposed group to receive government recognition.
