Group gathers signatures to save Hangar One By Banks Albach Palo Alto Daily News (CA) September 10, 2007A group hoping to stop the Navy from tearing down Hangar One turned its campaign up a notch this weekend, gathering nearly 1,500 signatures in support of restoring Mountain View's metal leviathan along U.S. Highway 101. Rather than demolish the 200-foot-tall, 8.5-acre hangar, a job the Navy has calculated to cost nearly $12.2 million, the group, Save Hangar One, is proposing that the Navy resurface the hangar with a thin, Teflon-coated fiberglass layer. NASA, which owns the site and would be responsible for its future use, has estimated that demolition would cost somewhere under $30 million -- a much higher price tag than estimated by the Navy -- and that restoration would cost a little more than that amount. ...
