Radioactive Boogeyman Haunts Point by Marc Albert Alameda Sun (CA) September 21, 2007Quantities of highly radioactive isotopes, including depleted uranium and cesium-137, were stored for five years in a Quonset hut at the former Alameda Naval Air Station. According to U.S. Navy officials, the radioactive material was put into the building seven years ago after it was removed from other buildings on the now-decommissioned base. The radioactive material was removed from building 346, a corrugated steel Quonset hut that the Navy plans to tear down, in 2005, according to Thomas Macchiarella, the Navy Base Closure and Realignment Commission environmental coordinator. "The material was stored there in 2000," said Erica Spinelli, a historian working for the Navy. Spinelli said the material was classified as "investigation-derived waste," and was moved "during the cleanup of buildings five and 400 in July 2000." ...
