Despite a lengthy report outlining a laundry list of radiological and toxic waste dumped in various locations at the former Naval Air Station Alameda, developers remain optimistic that problems aren't insurmountable.

Despite a lengthy report outlining a laundry list of radiological and toxic waste dumped in various locations at the former Naval Air Station Alameda, developers remain optimistic that problems aren't insurmountable.

"We are still very early in the process," said Joe Aguirre, a spokesman for SunCal Companies, the developer selected to oversee reuse of the decommissioned base. Aguirre said the firm would know more once various studies are completed.

The Navy has not issued an estimate of how much it would cost, or how long it would take to decontaminate the sprawling 2,000-acre base. The Navy declined to return calls or e-mails seeking that information.
