Navy could leave Athens early Supply school may be vacated in 2010 By Blake Aued Athens Banner-Herald (GA) October 31, 2007The Navy signed a contract Tuesday to begin construction on the Navy Supply Corps School's new home in Rhode Island, and the school could be leaving Athens earlier than expected. The Navy has agreed to pay a Providence, R.I., firm $24.5 million to build one building and renovate another at Naval Station Newport. The buildings will include housing, classroom space and other facilities for the hundreds of sailors and Marines who now train in Athens. Construction is expected to take two years. If all goes as planned, the Navy school could leave the Prince Avenue base it's called home for half a century within the next three years, clearing the way for a University of Georgia medical campus. ...
