Discoveries hamper BNAS cleanup Beth Brogan Brunswick Times Record (ME) December 6, 2007 BRUNSWICK - Cleanup of a Superfund site at Brunswick Naval Air Base was halted last week after excavators discovered what initially appeared to be "bombs or torpedoes." Upon closer inspection, the items were deemed to be an "inert, non-explosive practice weapon," according to a Navy spokesman. Excavation of the site has since continued. However, within a week prior to the discovery, the Navy received a letter from a former base employee alerting officials to the routine practice, during the 1970s and likely years prior, of disposing of vacuum tubes — some containing radioactive material —' in a landfill on the northern part of the base.
