FORT CHAFFEE: Burnt-out area called disaster; clean-up cited

FORT CHAFFEE - A section of old Fort Chaffee that lost 150 vacant 
buildings to fire Tuesday was declared a disaster as police sealed off 
the area to keep the public from possible exposure to any hazardous 
material left over from the blaze.

Sebastian County Judge David Hudson said Wednesday the disaster 
declaration was made to determine if the area was eligible for state or 
federal funds to help pay for removing any hazardous material from the 
100-acre site or for reimbursing tenants of destroyed buildings who lost 
property and the agencies that spent resources fighting the fire.

The county could become eligible for state disaster aid if the damage 
exceeds $212,000 or federal aid if the damage exceeds $3 million, Hudson 
said.
