DEFENSE ENVIRONMENTAL GRANTS AWARDED On September 27, the Department of Defense announced the 16 recipients of awards under its Environmental Scholarships/Fellowships and Grants Program. This program was created pursuant to authorization contained in Section 4451 of the fiscal year 1993 and Section 1333 of the fiscal year 1994 Defense Authorization Acts. The program has two purposes. One is to provide scholarships and fellowships to enable individuals to qualify for employment in various Defense environmental programs. The other is to provide demonstration grants to assist institutions of higher education in developing programs in environmental fields applicable to the Department of Defense. Approximately $20 million in awards were announced. Each institutions will receive nearly $1.3 million, of which about $437,500 will be for scholarships and fellowships and $836,375 will be for the demonstration grant. Section 4451, the scholarship/fellowship element of the program, was reauthorized for fiscal year 1995, but no funds were included for the continuation of Section 1333.
