Subject: | HIPPS ROAD SETTLEMENT |
HIPPS ROAD SETTLEMENT The principal responsible party at Hipps Road, one of the nation's most notorious Superfund sites, has settled with nearly 700 plaintiffs. WMX (Waste Management), which bought the operator of the Hipps Road Landfill, in Jacksonville, Florida after it ceased operations there, has agreed to pay $18 million to at least 671 neighbors of the highly contaminated site, and it has also agreed to spend $250,000 connecting affected homes to municipal water lines. Though the metals, PCBs, and other contaminants were hauled from Jacksonville area Navy facilities, the Navy was not a party to the settlement.
