Subject: | Army Wants to Train on Nat'l Forest |
From: "Nick Morgan" <nmorgan@igc.org> FYI, from: GREENLines, Mon. May 20, 1996, from GREEN, the Grassroots Environmental Effectiveness Network, A project of Defenders of Wildlife. (202)789-2844x288 or email rfeather@clark.net FOREST ANNEX: Plans by an Army base in Louisiana to annex 85,000 acres of the Kisatchie NF for training are a "cause of concern" among local citizens and Forest Service employees, says Joe Fox of the Association of Forest Service Employees for Environmental Ethics. "No matter how carefully the Army at Fork Polk conducts its training activities, its presence in the forest is likely to be harmful to the existing rare ecosystems and endangered species," says Fox. The area includes one of the largest stands of longleaf pine and creek bottom woodlands in the state, and is habitat for the third largest population of the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker.
