From: Aimee Houghton <aimeeh@igc.org> Mark your calendar for the REGIONAL FORUM ON MILITARY BASE CLEANUP TECHNOLOGY US EPA Regions IX and X (AK, AZ, CA, HI, ID, NV, UT, WA) September 26 and 27, 1996 Millbrae, CA ________________________________________ TO: Individuals representing diverse constituencies interested in contributing to the national policy and funding dialogue on military base cleanup technology From: Peter Wood (Cal EPA) and Lenny Siegel (San Francisco State University, CAREER/PRO), Co-chairs of the Forum Planning Committee A broad partnership of organizations, listed below, has scheduled a unique forum to bring together diverse constituencies from the Western states and Pacific region to discuss ways to promote the development and use of innovative technologies in the cleanup of contaminated military installation. Building on the growing dialogue that is now underway at many active and former military bases in the region, the forum will provide an opportunity to share experiences with stakeholders from other localities and to help develop channels through which local representatives can influence national policy on cleanup technology. This is your opportunity, not only to work to improve the way contaminated bases are cleaned up, but to create a model for regional stakeholder involvement on complex environmental issues. Please mark September 26 and 27 on your calendars to attend the Regional Forum on Military Base Cleanup Technology. We'll be sending out further details soon. When: September 26 and 27, 1996 (two full days) Where: Clarion Hotel, Milbrae, California (near the San Francisco International Airport) Sponsors: Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Environmental Security Department of Defense, Office of Regional Environmental Coordinators Western Governors Association U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (Regions IX and X) California Environmental Protection Agency Bay Area Defense Action Conversion Team (BADCAT) San Francisco State University, CAREER/PRO Fee: Registration fee is WAIVED Who: 150-200 individuals from EPA Region's IX and X representing the following interests in military base cleanup technology*** - Public Stakeholders, including members of Restoration Advisory Boards - Representatives of local governments and local reuse authorities - Remedial project managers and other officials from state, tribal, and federal regulatory and natural resource trustee agencies - Remedial project managers and other officials from the armed services and other regulated federal agencies - Environmental consultants, cleanup contractors, and technology vendors - Representatives of other organizations, such as academic institutions, with an interest in base cleanup technology Objectives: 1. Elicit broad-based multi-state regional input from diverse interests on military base technology needs and concerns and develop an action plan to implement and communicate recommendations: - among forum participants - from forum participants to their constituencies - from forum participants to national policy makers 2. Draw lessons learned from the forum experience to make recommendations to the Department of Defense for implementing the regional stakeholder approach in other U.S. regions. To ensure our negotiated group discount, lodging reservations at the Clarion must be made by September 11, after that time, rooms can be reserved only on a space-available basis. *** To ensure broad participation, a limited number of travel scholarships will be made available to one member per Restoration Advisory Board in EPA Regions XI and X and to other members of the public and Sovereign Indian Nations outside the Bay Area, on a first-come basis.
