Subject: | CAL DSMOA CUT |
From: Lenny Siegel <lsiegel@igc.org> CALIFORNIA DSMOA CUT The State of California learned just last week that its current year (FY1996) allocation for the oversight of cleanup and reuse of Defense installations in the state would be unexpectedly cut by 40%. (I don't know yet how much of a reduction was expected.) As a result, the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) - part of Cal EPA - is cutting back on most of its Defense cleanup activities other than on-site project oversight . DTSC announced the cutback in a last-minute fax to members of the California Base Closure Environmental Advisory Group (BCEAG), canceling the meeting scheduled for this Wednesday, September 11. Reportedly, DTSC has pulled out of meetings it had scheduled with other agencies, as well. In the fax, Stan Phillippe, Division Chief of the DTSC Office of Military Facilities, apologized: "This is disappointing because this meeting marked the beginning of a new chapter in the group's (BCEAG's) history; adding 14 members representing a diverse constituency to address important issues facing our state." To express concern about the DSMOA cut, contact Cary Jones, Chief, Environmental Restoration Division, Directorate of Military Programs, Army Corps of Engineers, Washington, DC 20314-1000. To urge DTSC to find the small amount of resources it would require to continue to schedule meetings of the Base Closure Environmental Advisory Group, write Stan Phillippe at DTSC, 10151 Croydon Way, Suite 3, Sacramento, CA, 95827-2106.
