ARMY ATTACK: The US Army has plans to expand a tank training base in the Mojave desert by 331,000 acres, according to an alert by No Public Land for Ft. Irwin!. The area, which is 94% public land, would be used for tank training battles. The site holds over 100 cultural sites, habitat for the threatened desert tortoise, and high quality riparian habitat. A broad coalition of groups, including the National Rifle Association and People for the West, oppose the expansion. Written comments are due June 3. For more info: No Public Land for Ft.
