Subject: | FIRING RANGE TREATMENT TECHNOLOGY |
FIRING RANGE TREATMENT TECHNOLOGY Defense Cleanup (May 30, 1997) reports that Solucorp Industries of W. Nyack, NY, has just received an Army subcontract from the Roy R. Weston company to treat 25,000 cubic yards of heavy-metal contaminated soil at a firing range at the Alabama Army Ammunition Plant. "Solucorp officials say its molecular bonding system (MBS) involved combining contaminated soils with a reagent inside a closed loop pug mill to reduce leachability and allow disposal in a landfill." This innovative technology is not only cheaper than current metal stabilization methods, but it converts leachable metals into metallic sulfides without generating hydrogen sulfide gas. As the requirement to treat firing range soils is more clearly established, more innovative treatment technologies are likely to emerge. Lenny Siegel | |
