The 3rd Annual National Hispanic Sustainable Energy and Environmental
Conference

WHEN:

 March 15 - 17, 1998

WHERE:

The Conference will be held at both the Oakland Convention Center and
the Oakland Marriott City Center Hotel, in downtown Oakland, CA. The
Marriott and the Convention Center are adjacent to and inter-connected
with one other, and events will take place in both locations.

 WHAT:

 The Conference is the only national event of its kind, designed to
educate the Hispanic community in general about environmental issues,
and in particular, to inform Hispanic environmental/energy/natural
resource professionals and students about the many environmental
careers. However, while there is naturally a focus on issues affecting
Hispanics, THE CONFERENCE IS NOT JUST FOR HISPANICS. EVERYONE is
welcome and all are encouraged to attend. We seek the widest possible
diversity of participants, issues, and involvement, so that working
together we can achieve our common goals.

The Conference has proven itself to be a major vehicle to reach this
community, and to open the doors of opportunity for Hispanics and other
minorities in the environment, energy, and natural resources field. NHEC
seeks through the Conference to provide a national forum to explore
vital environmental issues that affect Hispanics, help empower our
community, and unify our voice.

SCHOLARSHIPS/SUBSIDY:

Last year NHEC paid all expenses (airfare, 4 nights hotel, meals, and
incidentals) for 230 such students from all across America to attend the
Conference. In addition, NHEC will again subsidize the attendance of at
least 400 Hispanic and non-Hispanic environmental students the next
generation of environmental professionals to attend the Conference.

This subsidy will cover the airfare, hotel, meals, and some incidentals
of the selected students. To be considered for the subsidy, applicants
must be currently enrolled in an environmental/natural resources related
curricula (undergraduate or graduate); send a one page cover letter
explaining why they want to attend, and what they will do with what they
learn in their future careers; and enclose a $25 registration fee made
payable to the: National Hispanic Sustainable Energy/Environmental
Conference, 1101 King Street, Suite 310, Alexandria, VA 22314. Students
who apply but are not selected to receive a subsidy will have their
checks returned uncashed.

 WHO:

 The National Hispanic Environmental Council is a national, non-profit
organization founded in 1994. NHEC seeks to educate, unite, and empower
our community on environmental and sustainable development issues;
provide a national voice for Hispanics before federal, state, and
non-profit environmental decision-makers; and actively assist Hispanics
to pursue the many career, business, educational, and policy
opportunities in the environmental, energy, and natural resources field.
The U.S. Dept. Of Energy, has generously provided a major grant to
underwrite this Conference, as it has the last two years, and NHEC is
grateful for their support.
