Subject: | Perchlorate Forum |
PERCHLORATE FORUM Perchlorate, a chemical used in the manufacture of solid rocket fuel, has been detected in groundwater or soil at at least 15 locations in California, Nevada, and Utah. It contaminates drinking water aquifers in nine of those sites, and it has also been found in the Colorado River. To consider a regulatory response, the Interagency Perchlorate Steering Committee (IPSC) has scheduled a Stakeholder Forum, to take place in Henderson, Nevada (near Las Vegas) on May 19-21, 1998. IPSC is made up of several federal agencies, including EPA and the Defense Department, state agencies from the three states, and several Indian tribes. It is seeking input from "State and Tribal drinking water programs, the regulated community (public water systems), public health organizations, academia, environmental and public interest groups, engineering firms, and the public." The forum will take place from 8:30 am to 5 pm on May 19 and 20, as well as from 8:30 am to noon on May 21. All sessions will be at the Henderson Convention Center, 200 Water Street. There is no charge, but pre-registration is sought. For more information, call the EPA Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 800/426-4791 or 703/285-1093 between 9 am and 5:30 pm EDT. -- Lenny Siegel Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight (AKA SFSU CAREER/PRO) c/o PSC, 222B View St., Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650/961-8918 or 650/969-1545 Fax: 650/968-1126 lsiegel@cpeo.org | |
