Global Green USA the American affiliate of Green Cross International Mikhail S. Gorbachev, President JOB DESCRIPTION Position: PROGRAM ASSOCIATE, LEGACY PROGRAM Location: WASHINGTON, D.C. Open: Summer 1998 Overview: Exciting opportunity to help develop D.C. activities of emerging national and international environmental organization. Focus is on military base cleanup and reuse issues, weapons destruction, and creating sustainable communities. Global Green USA (GG USA) is headquartered in Los Angeles and is the U.S. affiliate of Green Cross International (GCI). Mikhail Gorbachev is the President GCI that is based in Geneva, Switzerland with affiliates in 21 countries. Our mission is to work in cooperation with individuals, government, and industry to foster a value shift toward a sustainable future. In the organization's role as a catalyst, facilitator and mediator, the Legacy Program is accelerating the response to the environmental legacy of the Cold War through advancing military base cleanup and reuse. This includes activities that move the US and Russia toward the environmentally responsible destruction and cleanup of chemical weapons and other weapons inventories. Duties and Responsibilities: a. Assist Program Director in planning and implementation of programmatic strategies; coordinate fundraising; draft fundraising proposals, media, outreach, educational and promotional materials; b. Facilitate international and domestic communications and information exchange; compose articles for newsletter; network with and keep constituents informed; c. Manage office infrastructure (e.g., computers, equipment, communications, database and file management) and supervise interns; d. Organize and maintain database; integrate database with national office; e. Assist Program Director with administrative tasks, and provide technical assistance on specific projects; f. Organize and share leadership responsibility periodic events such as roundtables and workshops; g. Assist with development of and manage annual national conference on military environmental cleanup and military base conversion; h. As lead coordinator of Legacy Education Project activities, liaison with Congressional offices on military base cleanup and conversion, appropriations, and chemical weapons destruction legislation; i. Distribute information to Advisory Board; and organize quarterly conference calls; j. Assist with development and coordination of DC activities for Resource Efficiency and Sustainable Communities Program and International Freshwater program; and k. Perform other duties as needed. Qualifications: Bachelor's or Master's degree in social or natural sciences or environmental policy/sciences. Strong written and oral communication skills essential. Occasional travel required. Knowledge of Windows and Mac, MS Word, Access, Excel, and Internet communications software essential. Two to five years experience with environmental issues, military cleanup and reuse (i.e., brownfields), or related issues preferred. Strong communication, organizing, planning skills are essential. Coursework or experience in Russian language, environmental policy, arms control, and/or political science is desirable.
