"N-waste found to move with groundwater" Thursday, November 12, 1998 Environmental News Network For the full story go to http://www.enn.com/news/enn-stories/1998/11/111298/groundwater.asp Research reported in the Nov.11, 1998 Web edition of Environmental Science & Technology, a journal of the American Chemical Society claims that radioactive contaminants in groundwater can migrate over long distances faster than originally thought. Scientists injected non-radioactive tracers into groundwater at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee. The scientists discovered that decomposed plant matter can bind to radionuclides and prevent them from being retained in the soil, thereby speeding the migration of the contaminant. A week after the injections, tracers were observed 10 to 80 meters from the injection site. Researcher believe these findings have "enormous implications" for current and future waste disposal facilities.
