ALAMEDA REFUGE DOCUMENTS RELEASED The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has just released two major planning documents for the proposed Alameda National Wildlife Refuge, which will cover a significant portion of the former Alameda Naval Air Station, in the central San Francisco Bay Area. Both the draft "Comprehensive Conservation Plan" and Environmental Assessment are available at the Service's website, http://www.r1.fws.gov/planning/plnhome.html/. The Fish and Wildlife Service is considering three management alternatives for the 565 acres of land and 413 acres of water to be transferred by the Navy. The preferred alternative would optimize Wildlife Management and Wildlife-Dependent Public Uses. A major goal of the Refuge is to protect and expand the nesting habitat of the California Least Tern, an endangered species that established itself on the property under the Navy protection. One of the Naval Air Station's runways would be abandoned, while the other, outside the Refuge boundaries, would be maintained to allow for one or two flights a year, to bring planes into the planned aviation museum.
