Subject: | Sunflower Cleanup Questioned |
The editors of the Kansas City Star (August 29, 1999) have strongly criticized the way in which the proposed development of the now shuttered Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant is moving forward. "Uncertainty continues to hang over the Wonderful World of Oz project. The latest problem involves questions over dangerously contaminated land in Johnson County where developers want to build a theme park and resort. The existence of the hazards is widely known. The 9,065-acre Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant -- the site of the $771 million Oz proposal -- has an accumulation of wastes from the production of military propellants dating back to World War II. What is not known is the extent of the environmental damage. As of now, a total assessment has not been completed. It is imperative that all of the information be disclosed before the project is allowed to proceed...."
