Marty, Regarding the reduction in cost by the Port of Oakland, most of that was due to a reduction in the scope of the cleanup. Since the Port of Oakland intended to continue to use the land for shipping and handling, only mobile toxics will be cleaned up. Given the number of sites with more serious pollution problems it is reasonable to postpone the cleanup of the Port of Oakland. However, the military has no intention of coming back and contributing to cleanup after the Port of Oakland no longer needs the land. Given that the Port of Oakland faces serious challenges in remaining globally competitive, it is possible that the Port will shrink in the coming decades and the Port lands would then require cleanup for other uses. Without cleanup, they may turn into more "Brown Fields" opportunities. Is that kind of cleanup acceptable to your community? Bill Smith | |
