Regarding the story in the Daily Oklahoman in which low birth weights are
tied to exposure to toxics at Tinker Air Force Base, technical advisors
hired by the ATSDR Community Assistance Panel at the Massachusetts Military
Reservation (MMR) have found low birth weights in a residential area
adjacent to the MMR. From earlier investigation, certain cancer rates -
particularly female lung cancer - are known to be high in the same area.

This is a correlation the people in Oklahoma were unable to make because
their cancer registry is only two years old. The Massachusetts registry for
cancer incidence has been in operation since 1982.

Cancer elevations plus low birth weights adjacent to a Superfund site with
known emissions are the next thing to cause and effect.

The MMR's Otis Air Force Base had a sewage treatment plant that routinely
aerated solvents, just like Tinker. The MMR's Camp Edwards also had
artillery and mortar firing, pyrotechnics, "smoke" generators, open
burning, and large demolition areas.
