Subject: | [CPEO-MEF] Fort Totten "Gift" |
Remember Love Canal? Hooker Chemical transferred their liability for a massive chemical waste dump to the Love Canal area school district for $1, a supposed generous gift. This is an oft-used practice by corporate polluters and government polluters as well. My advice is to fully scrutinize the deed and see if there were any deed restrictions or notifications of its environmental hazards in the deed. Recently we were given a field office in Fort Totten, a decommisioned (or semi-decommisioned) Army base in northern Queens. We thought we were very fortunate to be offered a space at this historic site. However, last week I saw a map that listed it, or portions of it, as a Superfund site. To say the least, this has been quite disconconcerting, but I haven't been able to find any specific information about the site. I was hoping that you may perhaps know more about the toxins at Fort Totten and I would very much appreciate if you could forward me any information or further contacts. Sincerely, Christopher Syrett New York City You can find archived listserve messages on the CPEO website at http://www.cpeo.org/lists/index.html.
