[This was posted to the listserve by Claire Best, CBest@dtsc.ca.gov] NOTICE OF WORKSHOP for the CLEANUP OF UNEXPLODED ORDNANCE The California Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) is conducting a workshop in anticipation of developing standards for investigation and remediation of sites where unexploded ordnance (UXO) is suspected. The following are key questions that will be addressed by DTSC and other speakers at this workshop: 1. Are there standards that can be utilized to oversee UXO cleanup? 2. What land uses are protective of public health and safety, and the environment after the UXO are removed using best available technology? How will land use restrictions be enforced? 3. How much UXO can be removed using best available and reliable technology? 4. Are there experiences that DTSC can draw from in making regulatory decisions? 5. What technologies are on the immediate horizon? 6. What is an acceptable cleanup level? What are acceptable uses for former UXO sites where remediation does not guarantee removal of all UXO? The one-day workshop will include presentations and a public comment session. Invited speakers will include representatives from: the Department of Defense, private industry, DTSC and environmental groups.
