Subject: | [CPEO-MEF] New Mexicans challenge Luftwaffe |
Ranchers, as well as other residents of New Mexico and Texas opposed to training flights by the Luftwaffe (German Air Force) out of Holloman Air Force Base, won a skirmish May 1, 2000 when a federal judge ruled in their favor. "'The Air Force possibly suffered a strong setback on May 1, in the Lee vs. USAF case because of Judge Black's decision to allow an amendment to the lawsuit challenging the legitimacy of the German Air Force presence in the U.S.,' stated Bob Jones, President of the Paragon Foundation. 'American Air Force officials have not followed proper channels in allowing foreign troops to train in America.'" (Sierra County Sentinel, May 10, 2000) The article is written by a representative of the Paragon Foundation, an Alamogordo, New Mexico-based "constitutional property rights organization." Though the case was originally filed in September, 1998, it attained support after two German fighter aircraft collided near Carlsbad in September, 1999. The New Mexico state Senate asked the U.S. Air Force for details of that crash, but a Holloman spokesman said that the Luftwaffe did not reply because the Senate's Memorandum did not have the force of law. -- Lenny Siegel Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight c/o PSC, 222B View St., Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650/961-8918 or 650/969-1545 Fax: 650/968-1126 lsiegel@cpeo.org http://www.cpeo.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ You can find archived listserve messages on the CPEO website at http://www.cpeo.org/lists/index.html.
