Tuesday June 27 07:47 AM EDT Environmental cleanup insurance at Sunflower site discussed By GRACE HOBSON - The Kansas City Star Insurance policies written to guarantee the environmental cleanup at the Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant are ironclad, a U.S. Army attorney said Monday. The Oz Entertainment Co. will buy insurance from AIG Environmental to guarantee the cleanup at the munitions plant site near De Soto. Oz has agreed to rid the plant of contamination in exchange for acquiring the 9,065 acres from the federal government. Bob Lingo, an Army attorney helping to negotiate the transfer, told about 60 members of the public and press Monday that the policies had been reviewed extensively. "We think they are tightly written...but in the 1 percent chance -- or whatever percentage you want to put on it -- that the insurance company denies coverage, the Army steps in and completes the cleanup," Lingo said. Lingo was one of 16 federal, state and private sector officials involved in the Sunflower deal who answered residents' questions about the complex transaction.
