Albuquerque Journal 7/11/2000, staff writer, John J. Lumpkin: "Battle Laser May Shoot Down Cruise Missiles Researchers Will Study Feasibility" Kirtland AFB - .... The Airborne Laser missile-defense program has proposes to mount a laser cannon on a Boeing 747. The 747, renamed YAL-1, would circle a battlefield, shooting down short and medium range ballistic missiles. The laser would heat the rocket fuel in a missile, causing it to explode. The prototype YAL-1 in Wichita, Kansas, is having a laser installed.
