Subject: [CPEO-MEF] Airborne Lasers

Albuquerque Journal 7/11/2000, staff writer, John J. Lumpkin:
"Battle Laser May Shoot Down Cruise Missiles
Researchers Will Study Feasibility"
Kirtland AFB -
.... The Airborne Laser missile-defense program has proposes to mount a
laser cannon on a Boeing 747. The 747, renamed YAL-1, would circle a
battlefield, shooting down short and medium range ballistic missiles. The
laser would heat the rocket fuel in a missile, causing it to explode.
The prototype YAL-1 in Wichita, Kansas, is having a laser installed.
The greatest technical challenge would be to ensure the laser beam is able
to work in the atmosphere close to Earth. etc.
