The Monterey County Herald Front Page Sunday, July 30, 2000 Toxic Secrets at airport By Judie Marks A plume of toxic chemicals is seeping into ground water from the Monterey Peninsula Airport to the nearby Casanova Oak Knoll neighborhood -- and from there, possibly to the sea. The Army Corps of Engineers discovered the plume of trichloroethene, or TCE, a powerful solvent used to degrease aircraft engine parts, in 1998. But city and county officials, and residents of the affected neighborhood say they have been kept in the dark about the contamination.
