Se estrena en Vieques nuevo documental sobre lucha en la

Isla Nena

Vieques: un pueblo forjando futuro, es el titulo de un nuevo documental
sobre la lucha del pueblo viequense. Segun la productora y cineasta, Johana
Bermudez, "la Marina de Guerra de Estados Unidos esta sistematicamente
matando al pueblo de Vieques." El documental de quince minutos de duracion,
sigue la lucha reciente en la Isla Nena, incluyendo el arresto de mas de
200 desobedientes civiles en la zona de bombardeo de la Marina el pasado 4
de mayo.

La pelicula se estrena en Vieques este sabado, 9 de septiembre a las 7:00
PM, durante la vigilia que se lleva a cabo todas las semanas en el
Campamento Justicia y Paz, frente al porton de la base militar de Camp
Garcia. "Se presentara dos tandas, entre rondas de piquete y musica del
grupo de plena viequense, Vieques Libre, "informo Robert Rabin, portavoz
del Campamento Justicia y Paz.

Bermudez tiene una relacion muy especial con el tema por ser de una de las
miles de familias viequenses obligadas a trasladarse a la isla vecina de
Santa Cruz, Islas Virgenes estadounidenses. En las semanas antes de los
arrestos del 4 de mayo, Bermudez estuvo en Vieques filmando y entrevistando
integrantes de los campamentos de desobediencia civil en la zona de
bombardeo y en el Campamento Justicia y Paz que bloqueaba la entrada de la
base militar.

La joven cineasta estudio produccion de documentales en Antioch College y
video y fotografia en Richmond College. Sus documentales han ganado premios
en el festival de cine AFRisistahs 1999 en Londres y en el Festival de Cine
MAAFA de Brooklyn.

New film about the Vieques struggle to be shown in the Island Municipality

Vieques: a people forging their future, is the title of a new documentary
about the struggle of the people of Vieques. According to filmmaker Johana
Bermudez, "the US Navy is systematically killing the people of Vieques."
The fifteen minute documentary follows the recent events in the Vieques
struggle, including the arrests of more than 200 civil disobedients in the
Navy's bombing range on Vieques this past 4th of May.

The movie will be shown for the first time in Vieques this Saturday, 13
September, as part of the vigil held each week in front of the entrance to
the Navy installation of Camp Garcia. "We will offer two showings, between
rounds of picketting and music from the Vieques Libre plena group",
informed Robert Rabin, spokesman for the Peace and Justice Camp where the
vigil is held.

Bermudez has a special connection to the topic of Vieques. She is from one
of thousands of Vieques families forced to migrate to St. Croix, US Virgin
Islands. During the weeks previous to the May 4th arrests, Johana filmed
and interviewed at the civil disobedience camps inside the bombing range
and at the Peace and Justice Camp that blocked the entrance to the Navy's
Camp Garcia.

Bermudez studied documentary production at Antioch College, video and
photography at Richmond College. Her documentaries have won prizes at the
AFRisistahs 1999 Festival in London and the MAAFA Film Festival in Brooklyn.
