Miami Herald: Panama looks to U.N. for help To read the complete article go to: http://www.herald.com/content/today/news/americas/digdocs/095263.htm Published Saturday, September 30, 2000, in the Miami Herald Panama looks to U.N. for help Country, U.S. military locked in dispute over contamination UNITED NATIONS -- (AFP) -- Panama said Friday that it had asked the United Nations for support in a dispute over the contamination of large parts of its territory by the U.S. armed forces. Panama's ambassador to the United Nations, Ramón Morales Quijano, said he had asked the U.N. General Assembly to take up the dispute in debates on land mines, chemical and biological weapons, and on the environment. Morales quoted a note from Panama's foreign minister, José Miguel Alemán, which said the United States had failed to meet treaty obligations to clean land that it had used for military exercises in the Panama Canal zone. The United States handed the canal back to Panama eight months ago. continued...
