Subject: [CPEO-MEF] Beryllium

Beryllium is a highly toxic, carcinogenic metal used in nuclear weapons
components, other Defense equipment, and even some consumer products. In
1970, the Defense Department discontinued the testing of rocket
propellant containing beryllium, but it is still found in weapons
undergoing demilitarization and disposal.

In May, 2000, the General Accounting Office reviewed the use and
regulation of beryllium products. Its report, "Occupational Safety and
Health: Government Responses to Beryllium Uses and Risks" (GAO/OCG-00-6)
may be downloaded from http:www.gao.gov, and single hardcopies may be
ordered by phone from 202/512-6000.
