Subject: [CPEO-MEF] Spring Valley

The December, 2000 edition of the Washingtonian contains a lengthy
feature on contamination and cleanup in the Spring Valley neighborhood
in Washington, DC. The contamination is the residue from Army chemical
warfare development and testing conducted in association with American
University during World War I. The Army Corps of Engineers has been
addressing the problem as part of the Formerly Used Defense Sites
program.

The article, by Harry Jaffe, suggests that people (and dogs) in the
neighborhood have probably contracted serious diseases as a result of
exposures, and that the Army declared victory (no further action)
prematurely. It asserts that the Army has been reluctant to seek
additional hot spots and has not been fully forthcoming about the risks.
It credits officials from the District of Columbia and U.S. EPA for
insisting upon full investigation and remediation.
