MIDDLETOWN (AP) - Safety measures at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant were minimal or nonexistent, former workers say. As many as 40,000 southeast Iowans and residents from nearby states handled hazardous materials to produce weapons for soldiers that helped defeat Hitler and win the Cold War. Producing the weapons caused some workers to turn yellow from exposure to the hazardous materials. Many workers handled radioactive substances with bare hands and breathed in deadly fumes and powders, unprotected by masks. Other workers on Line 1, where they produced atomic weapons, were said to have developed a death walk - a gait called the ""Line 1 shuffle.''
