Italy calls for Nato uranium probe By James Blitz in Rome and Alexander Nicoll in London Published: January 3 2001 18:51GMT | Last Updated: January 3 2001 20:08GMT The Italian government on Wednesday called on Nato to reveal all aspects of its use of depleted uranium in weapons deployed in the Balkans, amid growing international concern that they may be the source of cancer among soldiers and civilians. Following the death of the sixth Italian soldier to have served in Bosnia and Kosovo in recent years, Giuliano Amato, Italy's prime minister, said his government would ask Nato to "assume its responsibility" and investigate what has come to be known as "the Balkans syndrome". "This affair is taking far too serious a turn," Mr Amato told the Italian daily newspaper La Repubblica in an interview. "Alarm is more than legitimate."
