Four French Balkan Peacekeepers Suffer Leukemia PARIS, Jan 4, 2001 -- (Reuters) Four French soldiers who served in the Balkans have contracted leukemia, but there is nothing at present linking their illness to depleted uranium from spent NATO ammunition, a Defense Ministry spokesman said on Thursday. Some NATO members have voiced concern that a few of their soldiers might have developed the progressive blood disease after coming into contact with the ammunition while on peacekeeping duty in the Balkans. The spokesman for French Defense Minister Alain Richard told reporters at a regular briefing that the four French soldiers were being treated in military hospitals, adding that their condition was "tending to improve".
