More Arsenic Found in Day-Care Soil By Steve Vogel and Amy Argetsinger Washington Post Staff Writers Tuesday, January 23, 2001 ; Page B01 To read the entire article go to: http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn/A31684-2001Jan22?language=printer Arsenic has been found in the playground of a child-care center at American University at levels much higher than previously shown, prompting city health officials to request the voluntary testing of children for arsenic exposure, officials said yesterday. The revelation represents a significant development in the Spring Valley cleanup operation, which began after buried chemical warfare munitions were uncovered in 1993. Since then, the Army Corps of Engineers has been excavating and testing -- at one time declaring the area safe -- only to have new problems surface. Based on the findings, the Corps has agreed to excavate the contaminated soil.
