Arsenic has been found in the playground of a child-care center at American
University at levels much higher than previously shown, prompting city health
officials to request the voluntary testing of children for arsenic exposure,
officials said yesterday.

The revelation represents a significant development in the Spring Valley
cleanup operation, which began after buried chemical warfare munitions were
uncovered in 1993. Since then, the Army Corps of Engineers has been excavating
and testing -- at one time declaring the area safe -- only to have new problems
surface.

Based on the findings, the Corps has agreed to excavate the contaminated soil.
University officials moved the Child Development Center to another location on
campus overnight after receiving the results Thursday, AU President Benjamin
Ladner said last night.
