Subject: | [CPEO-MEF] Marianas range challenge |
Environmental critics have reportedly opened a new front in their challenges to Navy munitions training. According to Defense Environmental Alert (January 16, 2001), the Center for Biological Diversity is "requesting a court injuction to halt live-fire training ... because of what they say are violations of the Migratory Bird Treaty ACt" at Farallon de Medinilla (FDM), an 1.7-mile long island leased by the Navy from the western Pacific Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas. A biologist at the Center said, "The continuing bombing and destruction of rare and migratory birds on FDM is an ecological travesty and is an embarrassment to our nation."
