Abundance of live ammo forces Navy to delay cleanup By Christine Clarridge Seattle Times staff reporter http://archives.seattletimes.nwsource.com/cgi-bin/texis/web/vortex/display?s lug=ammo08m&date=20010208 The Navy has suspended the underwater cleanup of a Superfund site - where munitions were loaded onto ships through three wars - after finding far more live ammunition than expected. The delay in the work at Bremerton's Ostrich Bay in Dyes Inlet is expected to delay completion of the cleanup by several months. The area was to have been cleaned by late next year. "Basically, the divers just found more than they thought they'd find, spread out over a larger area," Navy Lt. Cmdr. William Fenick said. So far, Naval Explosive Ordnance Disposal divers have recovered more than 2,000 pieces of live and inert ammunition, Fenick said, including 20-mm, 40-mm and 5-inch shells. It will be up to the Navy to figure out the safest way to remove the ammunition, Fenick said.
