Abundance of live ammo forces Navy to delay cleanup

The Navy has suspended the underwater cleanup of a Superfund site - where
munitions were loaded onto ships through three wars - after finding far more
live ammunition than expected.

The delay in the work at Bremerton's Ostrich Bay in Dyes Inlet is expected to
delay completion of the cleanup by several months. The area was to have been
cleaned by late next year.
"Basically, the divers just found more than they thought they'd find, spread
out over a larger area," Navy Lt. Cmdr. William Fenick said.

So far, Naval Explosive Ordnance Disposal divers have recovered more than 2,000
pieces of live and inert ammunition, Fenick said, including 20-mm, 40-mm and
5-inch shells.

It will be up to the Navy to figure out the safest way to remove the
ammunition, Fenick said. "We'll resume work when we're sure the operation is
completely safe."
