PACIFIC ISLANDS REPORT Pacific Islands Development Program/East-West Center With Support From Center for Pacific Islands Studies/University of Hawai=91= i ---------------------------------------------------------------------------= - ---- GUIDELINES FOR MILITARY BOMBING ON FARALLON DE MEDINILLA CONSIDERED By Aldwin R. Fajardo Staff Reporter SAIPAN, Northern Mariana Islands (March 7, 2001 =AD Saipan Tribune/Abridged)---The Senate is seriously looking at setting the guidelines for the U.S. Military's bombing exercises on Farallon de Medinilla, in new attempts to save the island north of Saipan from further destruction. Senate Floor Leader Pete P. Reyes disclosed plans to craft a resolution= that would list the kind of military activities that may be allowed. While acknowledging that the CNMI allowed the island's use for military exercises when it signed the Covenant with the US, Mr. Reyes said local leaders were not aware then of the environmental destruction that comes= with the bombing. "Only yesterday did we learn that the exercises have been causing intolerable damage to the island because the bombing has been concentrated on the middle part of Farallon de Medinilla," he said.
