By JAMES KINSELLA STAFF WRITER CHILMARK - An environmental group wants the Navy to open its review of Nomans Land island to more public scrutiny. The Navy is forming a "Technical Review Committee" to review its environmental cleanup of the 628-acre island, located 2.7 miles off the southern coast of Martha's Vineyard. The Navy used the island for target practice from 1943 to 196 and has been removing contaminated soil. The first meeting of the committee is this afternoon at the Menemsha School in Chilmark. Representatives from the Aquinnah Wampanoag tribe and the towns of Chilmark and Aquinnah are scheduled to attend, but the meeting is not open to the public.
