Subject: | [CPEO-MEF] Army halts Camp Bonneville UXO cleanup |
This week the Army reneged on its commitment to clean Camp Bonneville, Washington (near Portland, Oregon) to the local reuse plan. Here's what the Army said.- LS "Because of budget constraints and the projected high cost of cleanup the Department of the Army has decided to with hold funding for UXO work. UXO work at Camp Bonneville will stop. Hazardous and toxic waste (HTW) cleanup will continue until completion. The Army will pursue transfer of the property to the Washington National Guard if possible. Or place the property into caretaker status until such time cleanup is technically and economically feasible. The Army will continue work on remaining HTW sites including: - Ground Water and Soils in the Impact Area - Lead in Soils from Small Arms - Ground Water and Soils at all three Open Burn Open Detonation Sites" -- Lenny Siegel Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight c/o PSC, 222B View St., Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650/961-8918 or 650/969-1545 Fax: 650/968-1126 lsiegel@cpeo.org http://www.cpeo.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ | |
