Army land at Crissy Field reborn as park teeming with wildlife BY MARILEE ENGE Mercury News Three years ago Crissy Field was a 70-acre stretch of asphalt, chain-link fences and decrepit barracks on San Francisco's northern edge, a vestige of the U.S. Army's long occupation of this stunning headland. Since then, a transformation has been under way. Tiny native wildflowers took root and bloomed, migratory birds touched down, the tide washed over a salt marsh. With unprecedented commitments from private contributors and community volunteers, Crissy Field was reborn as a national park within a densely populated city that has few places to romp and stroll.
