Subject: | [CPEO-MEF] Rep. Blumenauer seeks UXO letter sign-ons |
[From Stella Bourassa <stellavb@aol.com>] In a "Dear Colleague" letter just released by his office, Congressman Earl Blumenauer (D-Oregon) is asking other Members join him in signing letters to the Defense Appropriations and Military Construction Appropriations subcommittees. Both letters call for increased funding for both the cleanup of unexploded ordnance and the development of better unexploded ordnance cleanup technologies. It is mandatory that Congress and the Senate step up to the plate in this area. Not only should funding be increased BUT each respective branch of the military should not misuse said funding (i.e. methodologies/technologies approved by all agencies, not just USACE, involved in each cleanup). UXO issues are well known both in safety to civilians and chemical contamination. It is time that action be seriously taken to solve these problems. Congressman Blumenauer cannot do this alone. I hope each of us involved in these issues will call our representatives and ask that they IMMEDIATELY sign the letters to show they are serious about these same facts and care about their communities. The deadline for signing the Military Construction letter, dealing with base closure appropriations, is close-of-business Thursday, April 26. The Defense Appropriations letter, focused on formerly used defense sites, should be signed by close-of-business Monday, April 30. Stella Bourassa ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ | |
