EPA to fine Navy for delay in notification of landfill

SAN FRANCISCO =AD The Environmental Protection Agency
announced Thursday that it is seeking a $25,000
penalty from the U.S. Navy for a delay in notifying it
and the community of a fire in the landfill at Hunters
Point Naval Shipyard in August.=20

The EPA said the Navy did not notify it and the
community until two weeks after learning of the fire,
in violation of an agreement between the two federal
agencies.=20

Following the notification, the EPA had the Navy
install air monitors to keep track of the fire's
emissions and found it was spewing low levels of
benzene into the air.=20

The Navy has started to clean up the shipyard, which
led to another legal challenge this week.=20
