Alameda Daily News Copyright 2001 Don Roberts, all rights reserved Thursday, November 29, 2001 We previously reported that Marty Martinson, a former Fire Lieutenant at Alameda's Naval Air Station, told us that he and other firefighters were assigned to work in Site 15 at the base and they did not discover that the site contained hazardous toxics and chemicals until years later when the base was being closed. We also reported that we had obtained a copy of a September 7, 1999 letter, in which Under Secretary of the Navy Jerry Hultin admitted that the Navy violated an Office of Safety and Health Administration regulation at the Naval Air Station, Alameda, by not providing all "information concerning the chemical, physical, and toxicological properties of each substance known or expected to be present on site . . . " Yesterday, Martinson sent us a copy of a letter dated last month from the San Francisco Office of Worker's Compensation of the U.S. Department of Labor in which they accept the claim of injury from a former firefighter at Alameda's Naval Air Station, ". . . due to your employing agency's failure to advise you of your 1973 to 1997 work related exposure to toxic chemicals until February 2, 2001." The letter also indicates that the former firefighter is being compensated for his claim. Were it not for the actions of former Navy employees Marty Martinson and Brook Beesley, that employee might never have been compensated for his work related injuries at Alameda's former Naval Air Station. __________________________________________________ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ | |
