High Hopes for Airfield

Someday, perhaps within the next decade, airplanes will again roar off
the runways at the former Crows Landing Naval Air Station.

At least, that is the intention of Stanislaus County officials, who are
preparing to accept the deed to the base this year.

They see it as a springboard for economic growth on the West Side, in
addition to 800 acres of business parks planned a few miles north in
Patterson and possibly a motorsports track near the county's landfill to
the southwest.

They envision transforming the base into a 1,525-acre business park with
plenty of parking for cargo planes as well as cars.

They can visualize a place where as many as 25,000 people could work.
