The top NASA/Ames environmental official said last week she'd like to
see the Navy hurry and clean up polluted ground water at a Moffett Field
military housing site that is flowing onto the space agency's property
and causing a multi-million-dollar mess.

At the very least, said Sandy Olliges, the NASA/Ames environmental
coordinator, the Navy should put up some sort of barrier to stop the
toxins from leaking onto NASA's land.

But this is only one of a number of complaints stacked against the Navy
about the Orion Park site, where toxic ground water sits beneath the
homes of dozens of military families.

NASA is the latest federal agency to criticize a Navy report which
claims residents aren't facing any health risks from cancer-causing
solvents sitting in the water under their homes; over the last few
weeks, the U.S. EPA has said the report is inaccurate and does not
assure residents' safety.
