Subject: | [CPEO-MEF] Old artillery projectile found at Detrick's Area B |
Maryland April 3, 2003 Old artillery projectile found at Detrick's Area B by Staff Reports Fort Detrick is waiting for definitive identification of contents of an old artillery projectile found March 24 at Area B. The rusted, non-U.S. 140 mm projectile was discovered protruding from the ground by a soldier assigned to the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases. The soldier was working on a farm operated at Area B by USAMRIID. Fort Detrick notified the Explosive Ordnance Detachment at Fort Belvoir, Va. The EOD team field tested the projectile and determined that more definitive testing was necessary concerning its contents. EOD determined that the shell contained no explosives of any kind. Fort Detrick then contacted the Army's Technical Escort Unit at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md., for removal of the projectile and analysis of its liquid contents.
